Indonesia Independence Day

August 17, 2015

This year marks the 70th anniversary of Indonesia gaining independence from Dutch rule, and Bali – like the rest of the country – will be celebrating in style on Independence Day, August 17.

Celebrating Independence Day - 17 August 2015

As usual, all streets and businesses, and most residential homes, will be decorated with flowers, and the red and white national flag will be flying everywhere – with the red symbolising courage and the white symbolising purity, two qualities that the country was built upon.

Local people will be wearing red and white colours of all manner and forms too, at events held in all towns and villages throughout Bali and the rest of Indonesia. Events typically begin with the singing of the national anthem, followed by a grand parade and lots of other activities such as Krupuk eating, cooking contests, and the Panjat Pinang contest, which sees nimble young men in races to climb the greased trunk of a palm tree.

The time around Independence Day is a great time to enjoy Bali, and staff at Villa Kouru will be happy to tell about all activities taking place in the area. Contact us now to enquire about availability.
